In honor of International Women’s Day—what an amazing way to spend Saturday: marching through Washington, DC in a drumline for women’s rights in solidarity with our Iranian friends!🥁

I’ll never forget when one of my Iranian girlfriends told me how her family fled Iran when she was a child. I remember thinking, “I can’t imagine being afraid of my own government—we are so fortunate.” 🫣

While many of us worry about rights being rolled back here, it’s a reminder that women in other parts of the world are still fighting for the most basic freedoms.

I have so much admiration for all my immigrant friends who escaped oppressive regimes, helped their families navigate life in America (often translating and taking on adult responsibilities as kids), and grew into some of the most incredible humans I know. 🥰

Shoutout to everyone who made my drumline dreams come true—especially @trumpet_brian and @allamericanbrass! (…and the golf cart angels who offered me a ride back up the hill post- march…MVPS! 😂🙏)

Love this pop-up memory of kicking off last year’s V-Day weekend doing what I love most: making music with creative friends and singing ’90s nostalgic mashup duets in speak-easy style spaces.*

As we roll into this Lunar New Year (Fire Horse), this is the only kind of fun, creative, supportive energy I’m claiming for the year ahead. A lot sure has changed in a year 🥴— And we really do get by with a little help from our friends!

This Valentine’s Day also marks 13 years (to the day) of my hEDS diagnosis—when all the puzzle pieces finally formed a constellation. At the time, I couldn’t sing or play instruments, and EDS was considered rare (1 in 500,000). There were no roadmaps, no guides—just community we were forming, niche providers who cared, and those of us willing to go forth into the unknown.

Leadership then didn’t mean having followers; it just meant going first. It meant making mistakes, re directing, and realizing there was no magic “cure- all” pill we could take…

This month marks the first February (Rare Disease Awareness Month) in my life that hEDS is no longer classified as RARE… Current research suggests it affects closer to 1 in 500! While the subtypes still are, I’d like to think the footprints we left have still made the terrain a little easier to follow; that alone gives purpose to our pain.

I wouldn’t be here—still truckin’ and back to making music despite the long road to improvement ahead—without family, community, and creative friendships like these! So as we say in Spanish, Feliz Día de Amor y Amistad—celebrating all forms of love, not just the romantic kind! 😉

Love is the force that propels us forward with that Fire Horse momentum! And as the great philosopher (Bad Bunny 🐰 of course) once said:
“If we Fight, we have to do it with Love!” ❤️

Thank you all for still being here, and fighting for love and humanity. Because of you, I am too. 🙏

In that spirit, here’s to sharing more Spanish/ Latin musical moments of my journey, some I haven’t posted because they weren’t “perfect” ..too much background noise, wrong notes, odd lighting, etc… Some because 4 years ago people told me I posted “too much” in Spanish..😏

Grateful for collabs with other músicos in our community like @dr.deepgrooves 🎹; several of us grew up in non-Spanish speaking homes and learned the language of our own volition to expand our inner worlds & build bridges across cultures!

I got so caught up in the 🎶 Glory of Old IU winning the National Championship that I neglected linear time—and have yet to wish my dear friend @darius.m.scott a very happy (belated) birthday!

Whether he’s dazzling us on keys, sharing hilarious run-ins with famous musicians/comedians, or demonstrating value-added synergies, one thing’s for sure… he must regret showing me the corporate jargon generator 😂 (pretty sure Fernando Mendoza has used it in a post-game victory speech or two).

Weeks before football season, I arrived at IU for the 1st time since graduation with one of my fav Bmore girlies — to finally take jazz classes with incredible IU faculty/alum after the missed opportunity in college(I maxed out my alotted music school credits as a non-music major 😂 ) + revisit the old stomping grounds. @iamsherrigoodall wanted to see her dad’s founding fraternity—one of the earliest Black fraternities in the country ❤️—which ended up being right across from my sorority…Alignment 🙌!

Fast-forward to today: IU wins its FIRST National Championship… in football?! I believe our full-circle summer moment healed an unknown rip in the space-time continuum…

Like many of us, IU’s QB (Fernando Mendoza), is a grandchild of immigrants…..AND he just led the Hoosiers to their 1ST perfect season and 1ST national title in the most “American” of sports. Part of his Heisman Trophy Acceptance speech was in Spanish to honor his family/roots/fan base.

When division is the agenda, sports and music remain radical spaces of unity and connection.. We can’t forget how far we’ve come—or that this country was built by immigrants. We are the melting pot, comprised of the cultures we carry from our homelands….which we are meant to have the freedom to share & celebrate…

REVERSE Birthday Surprise is when you surprise someone else (and yourself 🤣) on your birthday! 10/18 Libra Magic!!🪄

Was a quick flip from the RSVP decline to the 7am unexpected flight to Georgia, but the Dragon Siblings 🐉 🐉 pulled off their best feat yet.. make it for our little sis/ cousin’s big day!

Truthfully, the government changes the last few months have rocked some of us with health conditions and removed a lot of the accessibility, resources, and insurance coverages we relied on. Thankfully, I am so blessed with amazing family and community, and really could not have pulled this off without my baby bro helping out with my flight & hotel! (+ a few other angels along the way…😇)

Not sure how all eldest daughters ended up with the belief we have to do everything ourselves and can’t ask for help, but when my brother found out I wasn’t able to go to the wedding, he did what any good millennial sibling would do… first track me down lolol, call to offer solutions, then speak life into me~ our generation (/ Chicago kids) know how to RALLY!

I received that call Friday night 10/17 in Virginia, and by 7:30 am on 10/18 was en route from Baltimore to Atlanta!

One thing about us Libras…we will go to the ends of the earth for our favorite Leos 🥰 ! So much gratitude we could all be together to see our beautiful bride have her fairytale ending (and new beginning), as we welcome
Harrison and his baby girls into our outrageous family!

Beyond blessed to have spent the last week learning from these true musical masters, and receiving some of the IU Music education I never had the chance to complete! (Also they’ve got jokes lol…)

Dr. Drum (aka Sean Dobbins )made his clinical rounds diagnosing musical symptoms that prevented cohesion as a group, and he + all the faculty had amazing exercises up their sleeves to help us improve on that! Every teacher brought something special and unique to the equation, and I’m grateful to have learned from these beautiful musicians and humans! 🥰

Day 29: EDS Awareness Month Social Media Challenge– “Tag a fellow zebra warrior who inspires you”~ a Musical tribute for my Little Zebra across the pond (I was thankful to have this 1st opportunity to sing “Emily” before May concluded)! Emily was only 17 when we first connected after my visit to the UK; I was impressed with how beautifully she was managing her condition at such a young age. While I had some hallmark EDS symptoms since birth, my health didn’t fully nosedive (resulting in my dx) until after college/ returning from living overseas. This was a few years before meeting Emily, and I couldn’t imagine trying to balance life and health challenges during the formative years like she was. I remember her channeling her experience into cathartic artwork that showed the “behind the scenes” of EDS.
She had many support systems in place for her age (ntm a diagnosis already). I was in awe, AND hopeful she would have more stability and ease as she entered her 20’s than I did… 🫣. But Alas, the “dark night of the soul” of that age range appears to be a twisted right of passage for us zebras 😂.. even if it manifests differently for each. As I listened to her updates when she had to remove people & situations no longer aligned with who she was becoming, I was reminded that even with the clarity of a dx, it doesn’t mean everyone has the capacity to sit with you in the dark. Some people are only comfortable with the digestible version they once knew, the one who minimized the pain, who pleased everyone, who didn’t talk about the challenges so it didn’t seem like “complaining” (having needs/ taking up too much space),the flowy ones , caregivers of all. These coping mechanisms are not sustainable long term…Yet there are minimal reference points for what to do once we acknowledge this as young adults. ~That is when the shadow work begins; this is where the growth happens, should one choose that path.
